From 4 years old, Remko Verweij has been playing various instruments, amongst which are piano, trumpet, acoustic and electric guitar and drums. In high school, when he was only 12 years old, he started playing in bands and performing on stage. This got his taste for enjoying audiences started.
After his love for eighties pop music, metal, Michael Jackson and early rave, he soon discovered hip-hop, breakbeat, techno and drum ‘n bass.
At the age of 15 he started playing at local clubs and parties promoting underground dance music alongside well known pop records. Soon he got to travel around the Netherlands visiting all sorts of places. From dj’ing he learnt to appreciate a lot of old music such as reggae, disco, soul and most of all funk. But living in a city like Nijmegen doesn’t allow for the best chances a dj needs.
One year later he started making music on an old Atari together with a good friend of his, Jochem Roelofs, who’s a magnificent organ player. They started fiddling about with all these different styles and mashing them up into their own brand of music. They called themselves: the Percy Delta Orchestra.
Why? Actually, nobody really knows. It had something to do with both Jochem and Remko finding the name Percy quite ridiculous.
A few years and studio updates later, they started collaborating with singers and other musicians. They recorded bass, guitars, saxophone and percussion in the small Underdog Studios. Remko even made a track together with a female singer who was declared the most popular Dutch singer two years later (Idols anyone!?!?).
For these collaborations they started using a new alias: the Providerz. As dj’s they worked together with several others and played such a wide range of styles that they thought this name was very appropriate.
For the whole of 2005 Remko has been living in Sri Lanka which provided him with the solitude he needed to get some work done. Now that he had found some focus, his tracks became better and better and finally, after 8 years of studio experience, his first record, “sLUsT†was released on 10 Kilo (www.10kilo.com) in October 2005. Next up was “Wide Awakeâ€, backed with “Straight uP†on Mob Records (www.mobrecords.com). And this was only the beginning. New tracks are being created as we speak and the next record to be released will be “Wickaman†backed with “the Blueprint†on Silo Recordings, a new label started by Michael Ball. Also, a remix he did for acclaimed producer DJ Hal will be released by the end of this year (2006) on 10 Kilo called “Comet Rider (Phonc’s On Impact mix)â€.
Being the versatile man that he is, he invented a new alias for his house and techno outings: STOUT! Keep an eye out for future releases under this name! At the moment Phonc is working together with MC Stretch (www.shush.nl) on some wicked new material and various other collaborations are upcoming, amongst others with Marloes Nova (www.marloesnova.nl) of Soulvation fame!
